Hedgerows and laneways: late spring

Posted by & filed under cornish holidays, tregongeeves farm cottages.

Eek! Suddenly the days are getting longer, birdsong is waking us and the hedgerows and gardens are bursting with splashes of pinks and blues.

We’ve been so busy here getting ready for all you lovely guests and bustling in the kitchen with our grandchildren that we’ve rather neglected our blog!

So without further ado – here it is, a quick catch-up on where we are at Tregongeeves Farm Cottages.

Well, we’ve got a couple of new families of chicks keeping us busy and Alice the Shetland Pony is keeping a watchful eye as we set about the daily routine of feeding and watering. And of course we welcomed Anna, the family’s newest arrival earlier in the year so things are definitely feeling lively round here!

Daffodils gave way to wild garlic and bluebells – they really were spectacular this year. From Lanhydrock near Bodmin to Trelissick Gardens just past Truro the vivid blue carpet was thanks to the warmer spring sunshine over Easter. But it’s a shame we didn’t see more warm weather for May.

Yes, May was a cold month so it’s taken a while for the pink blooms of campions and foxgloves to show up in the hedgerows.

We made a pretty good pesto from the garlic last month, but to be honest it was quite a faff and I wish we’d just popped down to the Heligan Farm Shop. I did this last week and bought a tub made by someone who really knows what they’re doing… it was much easier!

As you know, Tregongeeves is surrounded by green fields and at this time of year the wildlife is really coming to life. We’ve not heard an owl for a while but there are plenty of fledglings to wake us with their dawn chorus.

Hedgerows in bloom

The hedgerows around the farm are starting to show signs of colour and the hilltops above our local beaches are really coming to life. And on the days that we’ve been lucky enough to pop to the beach the water is starting to look pretty inviting. Not warm enough for a paddle yet, but it won’t be long…

Tregongeeves Farm Cottages is surrounded by 22 acres of rolling Cornish countryside. Learn more about the area here here.
