Our favourite dog-friendly beaches

Posted by & filed under beach, dog-friendly.

Dog-friendly beaches in Cornwall are not so hard to come by as they have been in years gone by. Some beaches that have previously banned dogs in summer have lifted their restrictions, maybe as a result of the recent trend to dog ownership. And in low season (from late October through March) most of Cornwall’s beaches welcome dogs and their owners.

If you take some time to walk a little along our beautiful South West Coast Path, you’ll find that several of our Roseland or nearby beaches are dog-friendly too.

Dog-friendly holiday cottages

If you’ve visited Tregongeeves you’ll know that we’re a dog-friendly family ourselves. And we understand that for some of our guests, bringing a four-legged friend along too is an essential to a successful holiday or mini break.

Our four legged friends don’t mind the rain and Cornwall is truly beautiful at any time of the year… so here’s our pick of dog friendly beaches that are an easy drive from Tregongeeves.

1 Gorran Haven

If you don’t mind a short drive down the coast to the Roseland then this is a gem of a find. Gorran Haven is a sandy beach with a small harbour at one end and the village to the rear. This is also a great family beach and a good starting point for walks along the coast in either direction. Several of the smaller coves around this area are also dog-friendly.

2 Par Beach

One of our closest beaches – a big hit with us, the dog and the grandchildren all year round! Less than a 10 minute drive and you’ll find a wide sandy beach where the sand feels especially smooth underfoot. There is parking right next to the beach, the local pub is also dog-friendly. The beach is flat so the water is shallow, and at low tide you’ll have to walk a fair way out if you want to paddle or swim.

3 Watergate Bay

Head over to the North Coast (not as far as you think!) and be rewarded with 2 miles of golden sand. Watergate bay is dog-friendly all year round and is also a good surfing spot. Parking, access and facilities are all very good. Look out for beach events such as water polo and book in for a meal at Jamie Oliver’s renowned Fifteen Restaurant while you’re there.

4 Lansallos

Lansallos Beach is also known as West Coomb and is dog-friendly year round. You’ll find this rugged cove if you head in the direction of Fowey, and up towards Looe and Polperro. Look out for the small waterfall, this is known as Reed Water and  used to power a small mill. This is a National Trust beach, so parking will be free if you’re members.

5 Porthluney Cove / Caerhays

What a treasure this privately-owned beach is. Popular with families in the summer, this beach is loved and used by locals all year round. Porthluney is dog-friendly throughout the year and Caerhays Castle and Gardens are a majestic backdrop to this secluded cove. At low tide there is plenty of room to get a good stretch of exercise in and this is also an excellent beach for swimming. Please note that June – September owners are requested to keep dogs on leads.

We welcome dogs all year round to our luxury holiday cottages. Get in touch here if you’d like to know more.
