Bringing grandparents on holiday with you

Posted by & filed under cornish holidays, family friendly, tregongeeves farm cottages.

Taking grandparents on holiday with you can be a marvellous opportunity to make some long-lasting special memories. But the logistics can be a challenge – maybe you need somewhere with room under one roof for everyone. Or maybe some family members need their own quiet time at the end of the day…

This week we’re sharing some holiday information for families who like to visit together. Some guests say they never thought about taking a holiday with three generations under one roof – until they found Tregongeeves. We’re perfectly set up for it.

Some of our guests – especially those with older children – will take our largest cottage Donkey Mill, which sleeps 6. A cot and a highchair is available on request and we’ll provide a basket of toys, too for younger visitors. Don’t worry, the box is changed and updated regularly and we give everything a good clean between visitors!

The ideal set-up

But taking grandparents on holiday where family groups take a small cottage each is often the ideal set-up. Especially if there are children in your party who have a different sleeping schedule to their grandparents. Swallows and Corner cottage sleep two, plus a cot should you need to request one. They are comfortable enough to take an extra child – or their parent – for a quiet lunch or a cosy story in front of the fire.

Separate cottages mean everyone gets the holiday that they want – and the quiet time that can sometimes be overlooked when a booking is made.

Lovely, jumbled up quality family time can seem like the perfect holiday recipe. But the visit itself can sometimes be a different reality. A wakeful baby or toddler who doesn’t want to miss a nap can challenge even the most harmonious family. Solid stone walls and a courtyard layout means each and everyone feels secluded and private. And there is no risk of noise disturbance from your neighbours near or far.

We’re mindful of the need for everyone to have their own personal downtime when they visit. So if parents are taking a lie-in, a holiday with grandparents might include a visit to feed our farm animals or collect eggs. Or if grandad and dad took small people to the play barn, they’d be able to relax and enjoy a hot coffee and a read of the paper. Both of these small touches are a free service that we know makes your stay that little bit more enjoyable. And being able to take some extra relaxation is definitely a bonus of taking a holiday with grandparents!

There is plenty to do close to Tregongeeves, so if you want to venture beyond our grounds and a lane-way walk, car journeys to a beach are short. Gorran Haven is perfect for seaside paddles and St Mawes and Towan beach are fantastic rock-pooling spots.

Heligan Gardens and the Eden Project are especially pram-friendly destinations. Walkways are level and you’ll find really good food choices at both. In fact, Heligan’s cream tea and home-made soups are worth a visit even if you don’t go to the gardens.

We can’t recommend our local pub The Polgooth Inn enough. A range of cask ales, good wine list and they are very welcoming to family groups. Be sure to book in if you want a Sunday roast or an evening meal here as tables fill up fast.
