Three favourite things to celebrate the sunshine!
Mayday is here and the sunshine in Cornwall is expected to make a welcome return for the weekend. So, today we’re thinking about what we can do to make the most of it. Here are our top 3 favourite things to do to make the most of sunshine in Cornwall – and they won’t break the bank.
Charlestown Shipwreck Centre and Ice Creams
First up, a trip to Charlestown, which is only a short drive from Tregongeeves. This quaint harbour village is gorgeous at any time of year, but especially beautiful in full sun. The Shipwreck Heritage Centre is a collection of items from a bygone age and artefacts from more than 150 shipwrecks. It’s a great destination to learn a little more about local history.
Charlestown has an interesting history based around shipwrecks and the once thriving local industry of China Clay production. The port is often used by film crews – if you’re a Poldark fan, the harbour will be a familiar site.
Close to the harbour you’ll also find the Tall Ships Creamery, which is a small family-run business. Stopping in for ice cream, sorbet or fudge is a favourite treat with our whole family – and our guests.
There is so much choice – and everything is made from scratch. Whether you like more traditional flavours or modern, zingy concoctions, there’s something for every taste. It’s definitely worth trying some of the fudge too – or maybe take some home with you!

Hot chocolate at The Hidden Hut
Grab your flip-flops or your bodyboards and head for Porthcurnick beach on a sunny afternoon. Park at the National Trust car park and take the short walk down to the cove. If the tide is low this is a treasure trove for rock-pooling, and an incoming tide is perfect for swimming or bodyboarding.
Porthcurnick is a great spot for a barbeque or picnic and popular with local families when the school day ends. And the Hidden Hut is a great option if you don’t fancy cooking yourself. This cute cliffside cafe has a good choice of cakes, soups and sandwiches. And serves a hot chocolate to die for!
With a blanket and a good book, and a fishing net or two for rock-pooling, this is an idyllic beach. Porthcurnick is sheltered from the wind and safe for even the youngest swimmers. We definitely recommend finishing your visit with a hot chocolate – especially if you’ve had a dip in the sea. The Hidden Hut is famous for its summer Feast nights where seafood, paella or spicy curries are dished up. But these are so popular that tickets sell really fast. But take it from us – it’s still worth a visit even if you’re not able to book a Feast ticket.

Cycle the Pentewan Trail
This flat cycle route is a flat cycle path along a disused narrow gauge railway line. The Trail runs alongside the river in places and meanders through some beautiful woodland. After a beautiful 4k ride, you’ll come to your finish at Pentewan Harbour. Pentewan is well served by a restaurant or tea shop and The Ship Inn also serves up traditional pub lunches.
The Trail can be enjoyed on bike or on foot and is popular with runners and dog-walkers. The flat, off road location is perfect for young and old and is easily managed by the shortest of cycling legs. Kings Woods easily accessed from the Trail and is a Woodland Trust maintained space. If you detour here and walk to the higher ground you’ll be rewarded with some stunning views.
Bikes are easily hired from Pentewan Valley Cycle Hireand you can choose a day or even week-long hire.
Sunshine in Cornwall has to be grabbed with both hands, welcomed and enjoyed – especially in these early weeks of a new summer. But perhaps our very favourite way of all to enjoy the sunshine in Cornwall? A quiet early morning coffee in the peace and quiet of the garden, here at Tregongeeves. And for that, there is no need to walk far beyond your very own cottage door!
And we do understand that unwinding sometimes means no travel after arrival. So, at Tregongeeves we go the extra mile to make sure our facilities provide you with the break you need. Learn more about facilities and a Tregongeeves welcome here.
